2009

Nick founded amber energy in his parents’ spare room, not a glamorous location or a particularly spectacular start. We only purchased 10GWh in our first year – ten years later and we’re doing more than hundred times that amount! However, our approach was already bringing home awards, with Nick being named as the Young Entrepreneur of the Year (S. East and S. West) at the Shell LiveWire awards.

2010 – 2011

The business more than doubled in procurement volume year on year, hitting 25gWh in 2010 and increasing further to 80gWh in 2011. amber energy was also lucky enough to be featured for the first time in the in the Financial Times list of Future 100 businesses in the UK.

2012

amber’s second ever employee started - Mark Corne - and the procurement service began to really take off. We also added another arrow to our quiver and started offering our customers a bureau, bill validation and utility budgeting service.

 And guess what? We won even more awards! First amber was in the FT Future 100 for the second year running, then we won our first award based on our service – Risk Product and Service of the Year at the Energy Awards! If that wasn’t enough, we also picked up Behaviour Change Campaign of the Year at the Environment and Sustainability Awards.  

2013

We narrowly missed our quarter of a million-revenue target, but we started offering flex procurement to our clients. We also brought on our third employee to team amber.  The awards continued, with Most Trusted Consultancy at the Energy Live Awards reinforcing the values that we started the business around.

2014

Things really took off and we went from a team of 3 to 11, moving into the Maltings. amber was in a really good place and were working with a number of student accommodation providers. We identified a new, innovative way of reducing their energy consumption by engaging students in their energy consumption and it was out of this that The Student Energy Project was born.

2015

The team grew from 11 to 21, and we smashed our first million in annual revenue, overall a great year for amber. This success made Nick feel we should use our service give something back, which is where Energy Relief was born – donating money to charity while helping domestic customers get the best deals on their energy tariffs. This was the year we launched our Energy Efficiency and Engineering team – now our Technical Services team.  A great year for awards, winning Consultancy of the Year at the Energy Awards and Most Innovative Business in the Smarta 100 Awards.  

2016

The strong growth continued, with employee count hitting 35 people and the awards continuing to flood in, winning Energy Buying Team of the Year at the Energy Awards and Innovation and Environmental Impact award at the North East Student Housing Awards.

2017

Our growth exceeded office space (again) prompting the move to our new HQ at One Central Square. This is the year we started tackling Build-to-Rent utility problems with our Community Utility platform and started to offer our clients water solutions as well. These new services and continued excellence in delivery saw us hit £2.6m in revenue throughout the year.

2018

Another big year for growth at amber, hitting 50 members of staff and being named as the Fastest Growing Business in Cardiff at the FastGrowth50. Our continued training and support to staff, excellent customer service and transparent communication and pricing saw us winning the TPI of the Year at the Energy Awards. We also had our very first ski trip to celebrate hitting target!  

2019

Our tenth year has included a lot – we’ve hit 70 team members, launched the UK’s first chatbot B2B energy comparison platform - Altbot – joined our technical engineers and bill analysts together to create the Data Analytics team, launched our new missions and values and were awarded the Silver Awards by Investors in People. We also had our second ski trip in a row, really rewarding staff for the efforts they put in.
